When you take a look at the most visited sites on the internet, what hits you in the face? Change, growth, new content. In a sense, a search engine is the perfect web site. By it’s very nature, it grows and changes continuously and moment by moment adds new content. But, most of us are never going to build a Yahoo or a Google. The competition at that level is horrific.

But the lesson is there to be read. You could build a great site with terrific content never seen before and do very well - for a while. But the imperatives that control our success or failure revolve around growth, change and new content. An obvious solution is to continually provide new content for your sites. Basically this means writing or constructing new pages, preferably with unique content.

There are, certainly, several easy ways to get content for your site. The first is to use other people’s articles. Nearly all of us who do write and publish articles want people to pick them up and use them - with live links to our sites, naturally. Despite a lot of mindless babble about a duplicate content penalty, article syndication is alive and working as well as ever. Just don’t scrape a site and replicate it.

Another source is RSS. Most feeds are meant to be syndicated (but not all so you do need to check Terms of Use) and they provide updated content. Other sources include content in the in the public domain.

Like all easy solutions, there are a couple of drawbacks. Other people’s articles may not be focused as well as you’d like to your site content and goals. And they don’t help your site’s link popularity. Along with growth, change and content, incoming links are a critical success factor.

Using RSS feeds or other search-based content can raise copyright issues, irritate some feed or site owners, and may be even more poorly focused to your site’s content than articles. If you use RSS feeds, almost inevitably you’ll see content on your site that is absolutely irrelevant.

Public domain materials are extremely useful as content sources - if you can find matches to your site content. Assuming that you can, then you will need to convert the material into pages or into a form useable on your web pages. This can be time-consuming, but it may be easier than writing your own content.

Ghost writers are yet another alternative. Here you trade time for money. But this can be a tricky process. Some are not really fluent in English and you may need to do some rewriting. Also, you may need to double-check and make sure that the articles provided are actually original and not nearly identical to existing copyrighted material. Some ghost writers seem to work by finding a site with a related theme and then pretty much copy material from that site with minimal changes. Not a good idea for you to post that as your own.

If you are trying to sell a product or service on your website, then it is important to make your site as professional as possible. You might think designing that your own website to look like a professional did so is a rather difficult proposition, however there are many tools online that will help you achieve professional looking design.

Step #1 URL

First of all, you want to come up with a URL that is professional. This means nothing long, difficult to spell or pronounce, or vulgar. What you want is a short and easy to remember URL that has something to do with your website and one that people will be able to share easily with others through word of mouth. This might take some effort to come up with because many simple URLs are taken, but with some thought and creativity you will be able to come up with something that works. NOTE: Don’t even think about registering a domain unless it is a .com!

Step #2 Design

When it comes to design you want your page to look professional. Fortunately, there are thousands of professional web page design templates that you can either buy or download for free. Then, all you have to is upload your grammatically correct and perfectly spelled content and your appropriate photos and graphics to have a professionally designed site.

Step #3 E-mail

You want to make sure that your web host supports e-mail for your URL. This is an important design element that makes you appear professional.

Step #4 Newsletter

A weekly or monthly newsletter on your website about current trends, need to know information, and the like is a great way to appear professional and well put together.

Step #5 Secure Payments

For a professional website you must be able to accept credit card payments and they must be on a secure server. There are no if, ands, or buts about it. If you do not accept credit card payments and if your site is not secure you can forget making any online sales. Be sure that your website itself is as secure as possible and that the software you use for credit card processing is safe and has extra security measures build in.

Step #6 Testimonials

Testimonials are another excellent way to build confidence in your product and promote a professional appearance. When you make a sale, simply send a follow-up e-mail asking for feedback and permission to post what they have to say on your website. Testimonials can really make a difference!

Step #7 Password Protection

If you have a membership type site, you’ll want it to be password protected so you can save the information of each member, allowing them to personally manage their pages. This is very important and can really give your website a professional appearance that will stand out.

Those webmasters that stick to the old ways and focus entirely on
Google are missing out on a lot of search traffic these days if
they are not also well ranked by Yahoo and MSN.

For the first few months after Yahoo decided to go their own way
with natural search (and MSN decided to get serious about the
search business), the search results provided by those two could
only be described as bizarre. Enough time has now passed that
the dust has somewhat settled and there are three main (from a
traffic standpoint) sites for quality natural searches.

The term “natural search” is to distinguish true searches, as
opposed to paid advertisements which appear in the search results
for many search engines these days. I guess you can’t really
fault the search engine companies from wanting to make some money
(actually, BIG money) selling ad space, but the debate over the
virtues of natural search versus paid advertising search is
something that could make up a very thick book and still have no
clear resolution…much like debates revolving around religion
or politics.

Like most people that have been working as online home business
entrepreneurs for a few years, I was strongly conditioned to the
need to “feed the 800 pound gorilla” of the search engine world.
Basically, “if Google didn’t love you”, it was very difficult to
get any meaningful natural search traffic to your website. Since
Google was actually the search engine that was serving up the
results for most of the popular search portals, if Google didn’t
look kindly upon your site and rank you well, you would not be
ranked well for most of the high traffic search sites on the
Internet.

However, the search landscape changed dramatically early in 2004
and things have been very fluid and interesting since that time.
Its not that Google has stumbled, or become ineffective as a
search vehicle, its just that major players like Yahoo and
Microsoft (via MSN) have decided to make a major thrust into the
search business.

Having been firmly conditioned (since shortly after 1998) that
Google was the “supreme deity of search engines”, I took the
highly publicized search entries of Yahoo and MSN with more than
the proverbial “grain of salt”.

Throughout a recent three month period, one of my websites
occupied the #5 position on Google, Yahoo, and MSN for a very
popular and important (at least in my line of business) three
word search term. This situation provided an opportunity to
measure the current popularity of each of these three search
providers.

If asked “before the fact”, I would have guessed that Google
would still be the overwhelming #1 search choice and that
Yahoo and MSN would be distant #2 and #3 choices. Therefore,
I was somewhat surprised by the results that were tabulated
during this recent 90 day period.

For the period in question, the search popularity results were
as follows:

Google: 33%
Yahoo: 31%
MSN: 23%
All others: 13%

Granted, the above results are for a single search term over a
particular 90 day time period, but the results clearly show
